How do our personal energy choices to heat our homes, fuel our cars, charge our cell phones, power our computers, or even download music to our iPods impact the environment, economy, and life around the globe? Which resources should we use and why? Explore how energy production and consumption choices affect the planet and our quality of life today, tomorrow, and for future generations. Can FIRST LEGO League teams find the ultimate solution to this global Power Puzzle?
Since 2001, Rockwell Collins has sponsored a local FIRST LEGO League (FLL) tournament as a part of the K-12 Business Education Partnership Program. Together, the Rockwell Collins K-12 program and FLL’s goal is to help strengthen the quality of education by enriching and expanding students’ interest in math and science.
This year’s local tournament, sponsored by Rockwell Collins will be held Saturday, December 15, 2007 at Taft Middle School in Cedar Rapids.
In addition to coordinating the event, Rockwell Collins also provides funding for schools to purchase the LEGO® MINDSTORMS™ kit (click here for funding guidelines). Rockwell Collins Engineers serve as mentors to elementary and middle school students and their teams.
A training session for coaches and mentors will be held on September 8, 2007 at KTOS in Cedar Rapids from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Topics include LEGO rules review, coaches tasks, NXT programming (basic and advanced), and further open discussion on rules, LEGO construction, RCX programming, and coaching. Cost is $5, lunch included. Contact Melanie Richert, at 295-8863.
